IVE (Korean: 아이브; Japanese: アイヴ) is a six-member South Korean girl group under Starship Entertainment. They debuted on December 1st, 2021 with their first single album “Eleven”.

Name Meaning

The name IVE stands for I HAVE, meaning the members are confident to show the public the skills they have. Rather than a growing girl group, the group aims to show themselves in a "complete" form.[1]

History

On August 22, 2021, an article published by Star News revealed that Starship Entertainment would be debuting a new girl group during the second half of 2021; it was also stated that former IZ*ONE members An Yu Jin and Jang Won Young, current artists under the label, would be included in the group. Later that same day, Starship confirmed the plans to debut the group but however left no comment regarding Yujin and Wonyoung's inclusion.[2]

On November 1, the group's official SNS accounts were opened along with the reveal of their name "IVE" and the motion video of their logo.[3] On November 2, the next day, a Naver article was published reporting that the group will be made up of six members and that previously revealed members Yujin and Wonyoung were to be included.[4]

On November 3, Yujin was officially announced as the group's first member, followed by Gaeul on November 4, Wonyoung on November 5, Liz on November 6, Rei on November 7, and finally LeeSeo on November 8, finishing the lineup.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

December 2021: Debut with "ELEVEN", first music show win; Fandom name reveal

On November 9, 2021, a teaser posted across the group's social medias revealed their debut date: December 1, 2021.[11] Two days later, it was announced the group's debuting work will be a single album - titled "Eleven."[12] On this day, the single album, along with its title track of the same name, was released. The album later became certified Platinum by the Korean Music Content Association (KMCA) for selling over 250,000 copies.[13]

On December 8, 2021, IVE achieved their first ever music show win with "Eleven" on MBC's Show Champion. Awarded just a week after debut, IVE is the fastest girl group to achieve their first music show win in history, beating the record previously held by ITZY.[14][15]

On December 9, 2021, IVE revealed through their Twitter account that their official fandom name would be DIVE.[16]

2022 (1): First comeback with "Love Dive", "After Like"

On March 15, 2022, a teaser posted across IVE's social medias announced the group would be making first ever comeback on April 5 with their second single album, titled "Love Dive".[17] On this day, the single album, along with its title track of the same name, were released. Two months later, on June 8, the album was certified Double Platinum by the Korean Music Contents Association (KMCA) for selling 500,000 units on Gaon Chart.[18] On October 6, "Love Dive" was certified Triple Platinum.[19]

On June 9, it was revealed through Gaon Chart that IVE had accumulated over 1 million physical albums sold just 6 months after their debut, making them a member of the 'million-seller club'.[20]

On July 14, it was announced that IVE will release a Japanese version of their debut song, "Eleven", sometime later in the summer. The song was selected as the theme song for Fuji TV's Virtual Adventure Island 2022, which began on August 11.[21]

On July 17, Starship Entertainment confirmed reports that IVE was preparing to make a comeback sometime in August.[22] On July 24, a teaser posted across the group's social medias announced their third single album, titled "After Like", will be released on August 22.[23] On this day the single album, along with its title track of the same name, were release. The album was later certified Million by the Korean Music Contents Association (KMCA) for selling 1 million units on Circle Chart (formerly Gaon).[19]

2022 (2): Japanese debut, first Daesang

On August 10, it was announced via IVE's official Japanese website that they will make their Japanese debut sometime in fall 2022.[24] A month later, on September 8, it was announced that the group's debut Japanese single, "ELEVEN", would be released on October 19.[25] The single was later certified Gold by the Recording Industry of Japan (RIAJ) for selling over 100,000 copies.[26]

On September 1, Circle Chart (formerly Gaon) reported that IVE had surpassed 2 million cumulative album sales on the chart just 9 months after their debut, thus becoming the fastest K-pop group in history to do so.[27] Weeks later, on September 19, the group was announced as ambassadors for the "Everyone's Campaign" of the Republic of Korea National Red Cross Institute.[28]

On November 26, at the 2022 MelOn Music Awards, the group won Song of the Year for their track "LOVE DIVE". This marks the group's first ever daesang (grand award) win, which comes 360 days after their debut.[29]

2023: First fan concert, I've IVE, signing with Columbia Records, Japanese promotions

On December 19, 2022, multiple teasers posted across IVE's social media accounts announced their first ever fan concert, titled "The Prom Queens".[30] The first concert took place on February 11, 2023, at Olympic Hall in Seoul, South Korea.

On January 1, 2023, it was announced through the group's official Japanese website that their first Japanese digital single, "Love Dive (Japanese ver.)", would be released on January 16.[31]

On February 17, Starship Entertainment announced that IVE was preparing to make a comeback with their first-ever full-length studio album, set for a release sometime in April.[32] Nearly a month later, on March 16, a teaser posted across the group's social medias revealed the album, titled I've IVE, will be released on April 10.[33] Prior to the full album's release, a pre-release single, titled "Kitsch", will be released on March 27.[34]

On March 24, Kakao Entertainment announced a new partnership with Columbia Records with aims to manage IVE's global promotions such as music distribution, local marketing and promotions.[35]

On April 1, the group announced they will release their first Japanese mini album, Wave, on May 31.[36]

On April 11, Starship Entertainment released a statement announcing that member Rei would be temporarily halting all activities to health-related concerns including abnormal symptoms such as heart palpitations and stuffiness. For the time being, she would focus on resting and recovering.[37] She made her official return to activities on May 26.[38]

2023 (2): I'VE MINE, first world tour

On July 27, 2023, it was reported by music officials that IVE will be having a comeback during the first week of October. Later in the day, Starship confirmed the reports and added that an exact schedule will be released soon.[39] Later, on September 3, it was announced IVE will release their first EP, titled I've Mine, on October 13.[40] Two pre-release singles, "Either Way" and "Off the Record", were released on September 25 and October 6 respectively.

On August 11, IVE announced they will embark on their first-ever world tour, titled IVE The 1st World Tour <SHOW WHAT I HAVE>.[41] The tour opened on October 7 at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.

2024: "All Night", IVE SWITCH, ALIVE

On January 8, 2024, the group announced the release of their first all-English single on January 18. The single, titled "All Night", features American rapper and singer Saweetie.[42]

On April 3, the group released a 'coming soon' clip teasing their second mini album, titled IVE SWITCH.[43] The mini album was released on April 29 with the double title tracks "HEYA" and "Accendio". IVE SWITCH eventually became the fourth best-selling album in South Korea for the first half of the year, with 1,625,294 copies sold.[44]

On June 21, 2024, Starship Entertainment announced that IVE would be releasing the promotional single "SUMMER FESTA" on June 28 as part of Pepsi's Korean campaign.[45]

On July 15, IVE announced they will release their second Japanese mini album, titled ALIVE, on August 28. The album's title track "Crush", along with its accompanying music video, was pre-released on August 7.[46] On September 9, 2024, ALIVE was certified Gold in Japan for reaching 100,000 units shipped.[47]

On September 24, 2024, IVE announced that announced that a special concert film, titled IVE The 1st World Tour in Cinema : Show What I Have, of which was filmed during the tour's encore Seoul concerts at KSPO Dome on August 10 and August 11, 2024, will be released in theatres exclusively at Lotte Cinema beginning on October 16, 2024.[48][49] Moreover, a special pop-up store will be held at Lotte World Mall Atrium from October 1 to October 6, 2024.[50]
